What is Ego?

​

Ego is our sense of self-esteem, a sense of self importance. 

​

Why is Ego Important?

​

Ego helps to us to feel our identity, enabling one person or thing to be unique and different to another. Without our sense of identity- how would we have diversity? Ego helps us to use words and language to 'define' ourselves and others according to our own human perception and choice, in order that we can then use language to communicate with each other, together with reason and logic. How would society function without our unique differences and identities? How would we communicate without words if there was no 'label' 'definition' or 'method' of translating thought and desire into speech and action in order for us to better 'understand' and 'grow'?

How can Ego help me and others?

​

Without ego, how would we appreciate selflessness? Without experiencing darkness, how would we truly appreciate Light? Without willingly rejecting ego and our sense of 'self' once we have walked with its flame and experienced its pain and suffering- how can we reach greater Heights in our relationship with our Creator and each other? Without ego how would the world of opposites exist? Without the experience of the world of opposites, how can there be the freedom to choose? Without the freedom to choose how can we worship our Creator at a level that is Higher than Angels? So how can our ego help us to get even closer to and appreciate Our Creator and Source of Life ( than we could have achieved without it)  by using our free will to choose good over evil, reject selfishness and surrender to a Higher Will?

Ego can help us to feel that whatever gifts and talents and blessings that we have- are important- and that 'I' have a unique purpose in this world and Reality. Ego can help one to have a level of self esteem that enables them to feel more motivated and joyful in serving others using our special gifts and talents and blessings.

​

Ego can help us to feel 'wanted' and 'needed' in our relationship with ourselves, our Creator and others, thereby helping to increase our chances of 'success' in whichever direction we choose to go, and whichever way our Creator allows us.

​

Without a sense of Ego- how would 'I' be different to 'you?' and if there was no 'me' or 'you' then how could we have a relationship? Without a relationship- how would we be able to share our unique blessings gifts and talents in a way that is meaningful and pleasing to our Creator? Therefore, our sense of ego can enable us to better 'serve' our Creator and each other and actually help us to become that which we are to become. If we choose to become more righteous and follow ways of peace, our ego can help us to achieve this if used in the correct and balanced way.

How does Ego affect our sense of wellbeing?

​

Arrogance can lead to the assumption that we are independently self-sufficient, that our life does not depend on a Higher Source, and that we are in control. However we see that we do not in fact know what tomorrow holds, and we cannot change the past. These realities together with our false perception and inclination/desire to be in control can cause immense anxiety and depression. Arrogance can prevent us from 'surrender' to a Will that is Higher than our own. By relying on our own will, desire, understanding and self and making it seprate from its Source- that of our Creator; Many of us are prevented from living and embracing each moment to the best of our potentials, due to our inabilities of letting go of the past and letting go of the need to be in control of the future.

The more egoistic we are, the more we tend to cling to this physical world. This can lead us into the 'forgetting' or 'rejecting' of anything Higher than this physical existence- thereby seeking the temporary pleasures of this worldly life and denying the Hereafter. By doing this, we reject Justice- and we reject a Higher Purpose- our days are spent merely chasing bigger houses, better cars, more wealth etc at the detriment of others. And is it anything other than arrogant to assume that we have more right to needs and wants of our worldly possessions than another when we ourselves have received our blessings from Above?

But how do we feel when we feel worthless, useless, and have low self-esteem? Is it not very detrimental to our health to have no sense of identity and value? Does it not cause us to become depressed, and anxious and prevent us from believing in our strength to be able to make use of our unique gifts blessings and talents? A certain level of Ego can help us to be confident enough to take risks, and learn from our mistakes and negative experiences in order to grow and learn, and to feel important enough to have more self- respect and self- love. How can we respect and love others if we do not respect and love our own self? How can we Respect and Love our Creator if we do not respect and love His Diverse Creation and see and feel that each being or thing has a sense of unique identity and purpose?

Although Ego can cause us to feel 'separate' and 'different' from others- if used with wisdom and to seek Truth and show gratitude to our Creator, ego can enable us to grow in our separateness and difference both personally and collectively through unification within ourselves and with others.

How can my Ego cause me harm?

​

When we assume our own identity to be separate from True Reality then we set up ourselves up as gods beside God who is One, and the Only True Reality; this false identity can lead us down the path of falsehood and delusion which is sin and disobedience. The path of return from ego through self- nullification to Unification with our Creator is a very slippery slope and difficult path. The barrier from Reality to Delusion, from Truth to falsehood, from Light to Darkness, between the bitter and sweet waters is a fine barrier which is is crossed when we willingly reject Truth to be part of and the Source of our Reality and pursue ways of evil and serve our own will above that of our Creator. Likewise we can cross over to the other side from delusion into Reality by surrendering our will and understanding to a Will and Understanding that is Higher than our own and reject the temptations of our evil inclinations that is driven by our 'ego' and 'obey' the rules and Laws that keep the barrier in tact. The Barrier is made of a boundary of laws and regulations- something that is essential in our societies in order for us to be able to 'function' in peace despite our differences in perceived 'self hood' as long as we remain within the Limits. When these rules and regulations are made up by man, and according to His own 'Ego'- we see corruption and oppression creeping into our lands, due to the fact that these Laws rely on man's own ego to feed them, giving rise to leaders driven by selfish desires, causing harm unto others due to their arrogance and rejection of a Law that is Higher than themselves- ie our Creator. This brings our societies to function in a state of 'delusion' and 'oppression' and its people are covered in a darkness from which they find it very difficult to break free from. 

 

Ego can lead us to escape Reality into a perception of reality that is nothing other than our own imagination- which is in fact also a part of a Reality that is only temporary. For how can falsehood ever be eternal? Only if we continue to persist in our evil selfish ways does this percieved reality of darkness continue to prevail. So as long as we have our minds, hearts, and senses and have free will to choose to surrender our Will with a Higher Will of our Creator- surely there is hope to rise up above our own darkness and delusion of falsehood?

So one may then be tempted to taste of the forbidden fruit even though he knows it to be wrong, in order to search for the hidden treasures of wisdom that are hidden beneath. But the sweet scent of the ego and all that it offers is like a dangerous poison that once tasted is extremely difficult to break free from. That is the trap. Like a serpent, our evil inclination of ego tells us that it is ok to feel the 'self' and worship it as a separate entity to our Creator, by following our selfish desires and that using our free will to knowingly disobey and reject Truth after it has been revealed to us will allow us to discover further truths that were not permitted to us in our obedience. When we obey the commands of our ego within our perceived 'self' that invites to willing disobedience despite the given knowledge right from wrong and truth from falsehood- then we start sliding down its slippery path and it become very difficult to climb out of this state. This can have a huge psychological, emotional, mental and physical impact on our perception of Reality and our future ability to distinguish good from evil, leading us further astray into the darkness of the pit. Once we are in that darkness, many of us have already forgotten the initial reason that we chose to take that route, the choice of setting ourselves up as gods beside God in order that we may better 'Know' Him according to our own limited understanding, according to our own ways of evil instead of His Ways of Goodness and Peace. So Ego can lead to disobedience, which often leads to further ego and disobedience unless we acknowledge our wrongdoing in deviation from Truth, repent and mend our ways. But why commit the sin in the first place through nourishing our own ego in an attempt to create ourselves as a god beside our Creator? Who knows perhaps we may be destroyed before we have time to repent and mend our ways?

Too much ego can have a very negative impact on our mental, physical emotional and spiritual wellbeing and growth. When we begin to feel so self important that we perceive ourself to be more important than another- ego can turn into 'arrogance.' Arrogance has a huge detrimental impact on our personal sense of growth and ability to distinguish delusion from reality, and truth from falsehood. This can henceforth prevent us from reaching our true potentials, as a human being to pursue paths of righteousness through seeking ways of Justice, Peace, Truth and acts of loving kindness.

 

When we become arrogant and believe ourselves to be more 'entitled' to something more than another, are we not less likely to want to share our blessings gifts and talents to help others who need our help? Are we not less likely to be able to show gratitude to our Creator and Source of Existence, and towards each other? Are we not less likely to respect the opinions and views and rights of others? How can we 'serve' a Higher purpose than only 'ourself' if we are arrogant instead of humble in front of our Creator? Arrogance often leads us to disobedience of rules and criminal behaviour in the Eyes of both our Creator and within our societies and prevents us from spiritual emotional physical and emotional growth and awareness. In fact arrogance can lead to spiritual decension and destruction if it is allowed to control us through our desires, thoughts, speech and behaviour. It invites to ways of lust, envy, greed, sloth, gluttony, anger, and vengeance- and what does this lead us towards if not sorrow, depression and anxiety through division instead of unity? 

 

From an Abrahamic perspective, Arrogance is a form of Idol worship. The arrogant person views himself or herself to be a 'god' beside 'God' as their thought speech and behaviour reflects in a way that speaks 'there is nothing Higher than me' or that 'I am better than another' and that 'my desires and understanding are more important than the Desire of my Creator' for ways of Justice and Peace.

Even if the healthy sense of 'self-importance' leads one to pursue ways of peace and harmony through righteousness- it can easily become unhealthy, self destructive and destructive to others at the point that it becomes arrogance- the arrogant person attributes all that he or she has accomplished to himself or herself rather than One that is Higher- its Source of Righteousness, Life and Provision- Lord of the Worlds.

How can my Ego cause harm to others?

​

How does arrogance affect our relationships with one another? Does our arrogance not lead us to mock rather than to ponder? How can we learn from others and from everything in our perceived reality if we are arrogant? Does it not prevent us from listening to the other's opinions/views/perspectives? Does it not stop us from understanding those that we seek to have a healthy relationship with? How can we serve one another if we do not understand what the other needs from us? Why would we feel obliged to help someone else if we believe ourselves to be more entitled to our gifts talents and blessings than someone else? So how does arrogance impact our relationships with others? How can we get to 'know' one another and 'get along' in Peaceful ways if we divide amongst ourselves due to our arrogance and sense of unhealthy self importance?

Are we not more likely through arrogance to pursue evil ways of greed, envy, lust, sloth, gluttony anger and vengeance? How likely are we to be able to seek Peace through faith, truthfulness, integrity, trustworthiness, commitment, love, compassion, kindness, respect, humility, tolerance, gratitude, forgiveness, patience, and joy- if we are arrogant and see ourselves as 'better' than someone else? 

​

When one becomes arrogant, he or she is more likely to pass judgement on others in a harsh way. How do we feel when we are 'judged' by someone else? Would we not want that others sought to see the 'good' and 'desirable' in us rather than the 'bad' and 'undesirable?' Passing judgement and acting in an arrogant way towards another can have a very detrimental effect on the other and crush their sense of 'self' and 'worth' in an attempt to prevent them from achieving a healthy sense of self that motivates them towards righteousness. It can be perceived as 'abusive' and 'oppressive' by the other, often leading to the other putting up an outer shell, wall and further barriers in order to protect themselves- leading to further relationship breakdown and an inability of others to express their true self and gratitude by sharing their own blessings gifts and talents with others.

let's imagine a world without arrogance? What would it look like? If we didn't allow ourselves to be controlled by our egos and follow our inclinations of greed, envy, lust, anger, vengeance, sloth which all stem from our ego- then wouldn't we have less war and division? wouldn't we have less hunger and poverty? wouldn't we have more collective 'truth-seeking' rather than trying to 'win' an argument? Wouldn't it be easier to love one another unconditionally and therefore receive unconditional love? Wouldn't we respect our diversities and celebrate them, while using each of our unique gifts and talents to help one another build more peaceful societies without our arrogant sense of self importance? Wouldn't we all unite in Oneness with our Creator and be more willing to Serve Praise and Glorify our Source of Life through Truth, Justice and acts of loving kindness in Peace? Does our Arrogance not block The Higher Light and Love from flowing through us- each of us as if a unique vessel in creation? Is this not the True Reality and Purpose of humanity- our Unity through diversity?

Is it not arrogance to assume that we know best? Is it not at the point that we rely on our own understanding and reject the possibility of there being a Truth and Understanding that is Higher than us- the moment that we Fall? Is it not at the point that we 'Hear' and disobey (by willingly rejecting) a Higher Truth (beyond our own understanding) due to our ego- the moment we choose Suffering and Darkness over everlasting Peace and Light?

Our Ego can invite us to pursue ways of selfishness, and evil is the result. However- perhaps if we have enough ego to have a temporary sense of  identity, while not exceeding the boundary into arrogance- it can in fact help us to move from One Stage to a Higher Stage towards Infinity through constant renewal and self transformation from one identity into another through time and space and become vessels which can carry a Higher Truth and Light into this Physical Reality by uniting the Upper and Lower Worlds?

How can I have less ego without losing my sense of Identity and self-esteem?

​

Here are some tips which might help us maintain Humility and our Identity at the same time:

​

• Reflecting on and Repentance for our previous evil ways led by our selfishness that have caused harm to ourselves and others and willingness, declaration and endeavour to mend our ways through Goodness, Peace and Justice seeking the Pleasure of our Creator who is Higher than us in all His Ways, and in the service of humanity. Return to our Creator as our Source of Life and sustenance so that we may 'exist' in a sense of 'self' while not transgressing His Boundary of Peace/Truth.

• Seeking to unite our will ( and identity through our ego)  with the Higher Will of our Creator Who has no Image- to become One with True Reality through Humility, Willing Obedience and Surrender to His Will through carrying out His Commandments. This way we are what we are and will be that which we will be according His Will.

• Discipline in regular prayer self-reflection and meditation with our Creator, Self, and Purpose- seeking a Higher Truth, Knowledge, Wisdom, Understanding and Love.

• Regular Charity and acts of loving kindness while remembering that nothing  actually belongs to us. Using our physical blessings, gifts and talents to help us unite with a Higher Purpose while allowing our identities to become vessels of Love and Light- in selfless acts to help others in need- an expression of our Gratitude to our Creator for Life and its blessings. Performing good deeds without expectation of return, but only seeking the Pleasure of our Creator.

• Pursuing the ways of Peace and Truth according to the best of our knowledge and understanding, through intention, thoughts, speech and behaviour to the best of our abilities.

• Treating others how ourselves would want to be treated. Loving our Creator with out hearts Mind and Strength and loving others as ourselves. 

• Forgiveness and pardoning of the sins of others. Non Judgement. Choosing Mercy over Punishment to those who repent and mend their ways. Seeking Mercy and Forgiveness from that which is Higher than us.

• Always remembering to show gratitude to our Creator and others for our success. Our success being in inspiring the success of others to be more Righteous and Just. Praising and Glorifying our Creator for our success that is a result of His Guidance and Righteousness.

• If we are to put ourselves in a box or 'label' of identity- to ensure that it is never static, but ever evolving and is only a temporary vessel in this worldly existence that relies on its Source at all times for existence and sustenence- through which we can transmit His Light and Love and Truth and Peace into the Physical Reality of our perception according to our own limited perceptions.

Your God is one God. As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, their hearts are in denial, and they are arrogant. Without a doubt, God knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He does not like the arrogant. Clear Quran 16:22-23

 

The Messiah does not disdain to be a servant of God, nor do the favored angels. Whoever disdains His worship, and is too arrogant—He will round them up to Himself altogether. But as for those who believe and do good works, He will pay them their wages in full, and will increase His grace for them. But as for those who disdain and are too proud, He will punish them with an agonizing punishment. And they will find for themselves, apart from God, no lord and no savior. Clear Quran 4:172-173

 

Your Lord has said, “Pray to Me, and I will respond to you. But those who are too proud to worship Me will enter Hell forcibly.” Clear Quran 40:60

 

But my call added only to their flight. Whenever I called them to Your forgiveness, they thrust their fingers into their ears, and wrapped themselves in their garments, and insisted, and became more and more arrogant. Clear Quran 71:6-7

 

And when he is told, “Beware of God,” his pride leads him to more sin. Hell is enough for him—a dreadful abode. Clear Quran 2:206

 

And yet, instead of Him, they produce for themselves gods that create nothing, but are themselves created; that have no power to harm or benefit themselves; and no power over life, death, or resurrection. Clear Quran 25:3

 

The servants of the Merciful are those who walk the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say, “Peace.” Clear Quran 25:63
